A – C

Action: The total amount a player has wagered, or the act of betting itself.

Baccarat: The worst hand; also refers to the cards with a value of zero (10, K, Q, J).

Banker Bet: Betting on the Banker. It has relatively high win odds, but a 5% commission is charged.

Burning: The process of removing the top 3 to 6 cards after the cards are shuffled.

Caller: The staff member who deals the cards, announces the scores and offers additional cards.

Carte: French for "Hit me", used when requesting an additional card.

Cheques: The premium chips used in a casino.

D – G

Dealer: The person who deals the cards. It can be a casino employee or a player.

Down Card: A card dealt face down.

Dragon Bonus: A side bet option paid out when a hand wins by a certain margin.

Edge Sorting: A technique for identifying card values using tiny differences on the backs of the cards.

H – L

High Roller: Someone who bets large amounts. Treated as a VIP customer.

House Edge: The margin set so that the casino can turn a profit.

La Grande: A natural 9, the best hand.

La Petite: A natural 8, the second-best hand.

Loss Bet: A bet that carries a higher house edge.

M – P

Mini Baccarat: Baccarat played at a smaller table. It is faster and offers lower limits.

Monkey: A card with a value of 10 (10, K, Q, J).

Natural: A hand whose first two cards total 8 or 9.

Player: The betting option that stands opposite the Banker.

R – Z

Run: A side bet option that allows consecutive bets.

Shoe: The automatic device used for dealing cards.

Standoff (Tie): The situation where the Player and the Banker end up with the same score.

Vigorish: The commission the casino takes on a win.
